Sounion w/ Petro & Giorgia

On most Sundays, I took the 108 bus to Ano Kalamaki, more commonly referred to as Alimos, to meet my uncle Vasili and his family for dinner. One day in early May, I arrived to find my mother’s aunt Giorgia and uncle Petro waiting for me. Due to my limited Greek, it often happened that I had no idea what was in store. I was promptly ushered to their car and we embarked for the coast. We drove south of Athens to an area called Sounion, home to the Temple of Poseidon.
It was a beautiful day (85 degrees) without a cloud in the sky. Along the way, we stopped at a nice roadside restaurant for lunch - fish, salad, spinach, tzatziki, olives, cheese, etc.
We arrived to find the area of the temple crowded with visitors. Entrance was roughly 10 Euros. And, Theo Petro was kind enough to buy me a disposable camera - I had left my digital camera at home. We hiked up a small hill (200 meters) to the site.
Sounion is known for the surrounding views. Standing at the top, the land juts out into the ocean, providing a panoramic view that spans over 230 degrees of pure ocean and coastline.
After visiting the temple, we were off to visit my grandfather’s cousin. Along the way, we stopped off at a nearby fish market.
We arrived at my grandfather’s cousin, who’s name eludes me at the moment. Here are some pictures of us having coffee at their home.
It was a nice surprise. I was happy to get out of the city and spend more time with relatives.
